Welcome to the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of British Columbia; Canada’s premier orthopaedic program.

Our mandate is to create knowledge, advance learning, and improve the musculoskeletal health at the community, provincial, national, and international levels.

A career in orthopaedics at UBC is an extraordinary opportunity; offering world-class education to both medical students from across Canada in our undergraduate program, to physicians from across Canada in our Residency program, to orthopaedic surgeons from around the globe in our Fellowship Training Program, and to colleagues from North America and beyond in our Continuing Medical Education Programs.

Orthopaedic sub-specialization allows intense focus of our Faculty in the areas of paediatrics, spine, reconstructive orthopaedics, athletic injuries, upper extremity, and trauma, providing outstanding treatment to all; whether it is a newborn baby, the elderly with degenerative skeletal diseases or a hip fractures, injured persons, the week-end warrior or the elite professional athlete.

Our Faculty is comprised of much sought after clinicians, teachers, and researchers who choose to contribute large blocks of their time to increase knowledge in the areas of clinical orthopaedics, musculoskeletal science as well as applied biomedical engineering. This focus allows orthopaedics to be at the forefront of exciting new developments in the areas of minimally invasive joint replacement, improved bone healing, advanced techniques in spinal surgery, innovative arthroscopic techniques and improved biomaterials and implants. With our increasing focus on scientific discovery and knowledge translation, we are proud of our affiliation with two major research centers, the International Collaboration on Repair Discoveries (iCORD) and the Center for Hip Health and Musculoskeletal Research. These promise to play a major role in musculoskeletal research over the next decade.
