| When it opened in 1886, Vancouver Acute was just a nine-bed tent used to treat injured railway workers. Vancouver Acute is composed of four sites: Vancouver Hospital, UBC Hospital, GF Strong Rehab Centre and George Pearson Centre. Now Vancouver Acute is one of North America's leading health care centres with 1,900 beds. Even though Vancouver Acute treats nearly 116,000 patients each year, every single one is important to us. Clinical focus areas for undergraduate and postgraduate orthopaedics are trauma, spine, lower extremity reconstructive surgery and orthopaedic oncology. | |

| St. Paul's Hospital is an acute care, academic and research hospital located in downtown Vancouver. With over 500 acute care beds in use and home to many world-class medical and surgical programs, the hospital serves both the local community and patients from across B.C. Its downtown location brings many of Vancouver's tourists and visitors to its doors. As well, St. Paul's also has a longstanding history of providing care to disadvantaged populations. Clinical focus areas for undergraduate and postgraduate orthopaedic training at this site are: foot and ankle surgery and upper extremity surgery. | |

| The Royal Columbian Hospital (RCH) is the largest referral hospital in the Fraser Health Region. As such, it combines both general and specific or subspecialty patient groups within orthopaedics. Rotations at the hospital provide exposure to the "platform level" services offered to a community with respect to trauma as well as reconstructive procedures in the musculoskeletal system. Members of the Department who are based at RCH have subspecialty interests in total joint arthroplasty, sports medicine, surgery of the wrist and hand, and surgery of the foot and ankle. Orthopaedic surgical residents assigned to a rotation at RCH also have an opportunity to attend both Eagle Ridge Hospital and St. Mary's Hospital for additional experience. | |

Children's & Womens Health Centre of British Columbia consists of BC Children’s Hospital and Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children, and BC Womens Hospital & Health Centre, agencies of the Provincial Health Services Authority. BC Children’s provides expert care for the province’s most seriously ill or injured children. This care includes paediatric surgery, including orthopaedics, as well as ambulatory clinics, emergency services, psychiatric treatment, cardiac programs, cancer and blood disorder treatment, neurology and neurosurgery, and more. Sunny Hill offers specializes services, such as assessment, diagnosis, consultation, referral and, in select cases, treatment for children with disabilities and their families in B.C. Focused entirely on women’s health, BC Womens provides service for pregnant women, newborns and women with specialized health needs from across the province. |

Prince George Regional Hospital is a regional referral hospital serving North Central British Columbia. The hospital serves an immediate population of 80,000 and acts as a referral centre for approximately twice that number. This hospital has 209 acute beds: this figure includes the 10 combined ICU/CCU beds, 18 Paediatric beds (4 of which are in the Paediatric Special Care Unit), 21 Maternity beds and 15 beds in the Rehabilitation Unit. In addition, there are also 30 bassinets, of which 12 are in a level I/II Intensive Care Nursery. There are also 72 Extended Care beds in Jubilee Lodge as well as 37 Chemical Dependency beds. Approximately, 75% of the patients in this hospital come from the city of Prince George, the remainder being from the regional population. The hospital has an annual birth rate of approximately 1,400. There are approximately 120 physicians on staff of whom 55 are specialists. These include 7 Anaesthetists, 5 Internists, 1 Dermatologist, 2 Neurologists, 5 Pathologists, 6 Radiologists, 4 Obstetricians, 3 Paediatricians, 4 Psychiatrists, 4 General Surgeons, 2 Urologists, 4 Orthopaedic Surgeons, 2 Plastic Surgeons, 1 E.N.T. Surgeons, 4 Ophthalmologists, and 1 Neurosurgeon. Clinical focus areas for undergraduate and postgraduate orthopaedic training on this site revolve around community orthopaedics. |

The Victoria Campus is composed of two major teaching centres, the Victoria General Hospital and the Royal Jubilee Hospital. The Royal Jubilee Hospital, located in downtown Victoria, has a history extending back to the mid-1800s and has undergone extensive construction and renovation over the last 150 years. Equivalent in size to the Victoria General Hospital, the facility houses critical care surgery, diagnostic, emergency and other patient programs. It has a sub-emphasis on cardiac medicine. The Victoria General Hospital was completed in 1983 and is located in a suburban area of Victoria which is undergoing rapid growth. Its clinical subspecialties include obstetrics, paediatric trauma, neurosciences and rehabilitation. Located within the Vancouver Island Health Authority, the two hospitals provide a full range of dynamic and progressive health programs for the residents of VIHA. |
