Dr Clarkson was appointed in July 2006 as an orthopedic surgeon specializing solely in musculoskeletal oncology. Over the past 5 years he has, with his colleague Dr Bas Masri, developed a program for orthopaedic oncology in British Columbia that integrates research, teaching and clinical work. His clinical practice consists of consulting on patients at the BC Cancer agency with primary bone and soft malignancies of the extremities as well as patients with metastatic disease requiring complex reconstructions. These clinics work closely with other specialties to provide the multidisciplinary care that these patients require. The patients receive their surgery at VGH, UBC or the Cancer Agency.
Research has been integrated into the program with the development of a Bone and Soft Tissue tumour bank that prospectively collects specimens on consenting patients and links these anonymously to our clinical outcomes database. Dr Clarkson holds a Masters degree in Surgery completed in Poul Sorensen’s laboratory at the BCCRC in UBC on the genetics of osteosarcoma. This expertise has allowed productive collaboration with scientists at UBC. The development of a clinical outcomes research unit with a full-time research manager, Amy Phillips, has facilitated the production of high quality research.
Dr Clarkson was appointed Director of Undergraduate Training for the Department of Orthopaedics, UBC in March 2011 and also MSK Block Chair. While training in Perth, Australia he received awards for the best anatomy demonstrator as well as best clinical teacher. Since arriving in Vancouver he has established a Summer of Oncology teaching program for the orthopedic residents as well as teaching learners at all levels from other disciplines. He received the Resident Teaching Award from the Orthopaedic Residents in 2011, and is looking forward to helping develop the undergraduate teaching in musculoskeletal medicine at UBC. |
